Hamlin Pool - On the way to Monkey Mia


You know you're going some strange places when you encounter signs like this one here ...

And Hamlin Pool is one of those places - it's the largest colony of stromatolites on this planet !!!

Ahhh, you say, nice, but what's a stromatolite?? It's a microbe, actually a very old one and one that was instrumental in getting the world as we know it today - this prehistoric bug is responsible for much of the oxygen in our atmosphere today.

And the nice thing about these is that they acummulate, building these nice little 'dome' like structures that you can see in the pictures below.
